About Charles W. Flowers, Jr., MD

Charles W. Flowers, Jr., MD, is recognized as one of the country’s top eye surgeons for his expertise in cornea and refractive surgery. He specializes in laser vision correction, in particular laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) procedures, along with cataract surgery and corneal transplantation.

His research priorities focus on improving visual outcomes of LASIK and cataract surgery. He also is advancing sports vision training, which enhances athletic performance through structured visual training exercises and improvement of the eye’s focusing ability with advanced laser vision correction techniques.

Dr. Flowers has earned funding for his work using telemedicine to screen for diabetic retinopathy in urban and rural medically underserved communities, for which he was honored with a Computerworld Smithsonian Award. He received a Patients’ Choice Most Compassionate Doctor Award from Consumers Research Council of America. In 2021, his teaching at USC won acknowledgement with a Faculty Teacher of the Year Award.

In his free time, Dr. Flowers enjoys surfing, cycling and calisthenics training. He is a classic movies buff.

“My journey to medical school began in high school, when I developed a friendship with a wrestling teammate who happened to be blind. It made me acutely aware of the privilege and gift of sight. From that moment, I wanted to do something to potentially invent a way to restore a person’s sight or at least improve the quality of life for those visually impaired.

I treat every patient as though I am caring for a family member. Establishing a personal rapport is a priority, so open, honest and transparent communication can take place about every aspect of their visual condition and the care interventions.”
