Primary Hyperparathyroidism Care

We offer innovative care for primary hyperparathyroidism and other parathyroid hormone-related problems.

Get Relief from Primary Hyperparathyroidism Symptoms

Primary hyperparathyroidism happens when one or more parathyroid glands — tiny glands on the back of your thyroid gland — produce too much parathyroid hormone. Too much of this hormone raises the level of calcium in your blood, causing health problems like osteoporosis, kidney stones, stomach pain, mood problems and high blood pressure.

We offer advanced expertise in diagnosing and treating primary hyperparathyroidism — we’re among the nation’s most comprehensive ear, nose and throat (ENT) programs. We developed many innovative diagnostic tests, so you get an accurate diagnosis and a treatment plan that gives you the best possible results.

What Is Primary Hyperthyroidism?

There are two types of hyperparathyroidism:

  • Primary hyperthyroidism is when your parathyroid glands produce too much parathyroid hormone.
  • Secondary hyperthyroidism happens when your parathyroid glands produce too much parathyroid hormone because another condition — such as a calcium or vitamin D deficiency or kidney failure — is causing low calcium levels in your blood.

Most commonly, primary hyperparathyroidism is caused by a noncancerous growth on one of your parathyroid glands, causing the gland to overproduce parathyroid hormone.

Primary hyperparathyroidism can also be caused by:

  • Hyperplasia (enlargement of at least two parathyroid glands)
  • Radiation therapy to your neck
  • Rare conditions, such as inherited disorders and parathyroid cancer

What Are Primary Hyperthyroidism Symptoms?

Often, early hyperparathyroidism doesn’t have symptoms. It’s usually discovered with a routine blood test that shows high calcium levels.

The first signs may include nonspecific symptoms like tiredness, depression, difficulty concentrating, joint pain and muscle weakness.

As the condition worsens, it can lead to:

  • Bone pain
  • Confusion
  • Constipation
  • Increased thirst and urination
  • Nausea and vomiting

Primary Hyperthyroidism Treatments We Offer

Your doctor may monitor your calcium levels if you don’t have any symptoms. But if you have noticeable symptoms, one or more enlarged parathyroid glands or a growth on one of your glands, your doctor may recommend surgery.
