About Benjamin Y. Xu, MD

Benjamin Y. Xu, MD, PhD, is an ophthalmologist specializing in glaucoma and cataract care. Dr. Xu provides medical and surgical treatments to prevent permanent vision loss from glaucoma. He has been acknowledged by Newsweek, Los Angeles Magazine and Pasadena Magazine for his excellence in patient care.

Dr. Xu also conducts research to prevent vision loss and blindness in patients at risk for primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG), a common and particularly devastating form of glaucoma.

His research laboratory develops new methods to detect and care for patients at risk for PACG, by combining artificial intelligence and advanced, noninvasive ocular imaging methods.

Dr. Xu has coauthored more than 30 peer-reviewed publications and a book on ocular imaging in glaucoma. He has also received numerous research awards, including those from the National Institutes of Health, American Glaucoma Society and Fight for Sight.

Dr. Xu is passionate about medical education and plays an active role teaching ophthalmology to medical students, residents and fellows.

In his free time, Dr. Xu loves to hike, cook and garden with his wife and two daughters. He also has a passion for classical music, having played violin since he was 6 years old. He is teaching his older daughter piano with hopes of forming a piano trio with his children, when they are older.

Dr. Xu’s Philosophy of Care

My philosophy is to provide personalized patient-centered care of the highest quality. I spend considerable time educating my patients about their conditions and treatment options, so they are empowered and ready to participate actively in their own health care. In this way, I work together with my patients to develop personalized care plans that optimize their clinical experiences.

Glaucoma is a permanent disease that currently does not have a cure. My priority is to develop friendly and fruitful long-term relationships with my patients. Developing and fostering each unique relationship is the aspect of patient care I cherish most.
