About Gautam K. Malhotra, MD, PhD

Dr. Malhotra is a board certified Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgical Oncologist. He is a California native, who completed his undergraduate and master’s degrees at the University of California at Berkeley before moving to the Midwest to complete his MD, PhD, and general surgery training. He returned to California and completed his subspecialty training in Complex Surgical Oncology at the City of Hope Cancer Center before being recruited to USC to provide the latest in surgical care for cancer patients.

Dr. Malhotra has a special interest and expertise in minimally invasive techniques including laparoscopic and robotic surgery. He is also engaged in innovative research with a focus on early detection of pancreatic cancer and novel treatments for colorectal liver metastasis. Dr. Malhotra has presented his work at national and international conferences and has won numerous awards for his research and clinical excellence. Dr. Malhotra chose Keck Medicine because of the opportunity to work closely with patients while continuing his research. He also enjoys the opportunity to give his patients the benefit of leading-edge technology and the latest research.

A big part of patient care comes down to communication. I like to take a little extra time to explain the diagnosis, work up, and treatment options so my patients have all the information and understand what’s going on. This allows them to be more involved and participate in their treatment decisions.
