About Sharon Shiraga, MD
Sharon Shiraga, MD, FACS, is a general surgeon at Keck Medicine of USC, who specializes and is highly experienced in minimally invasive surgeries involving the stomach, esophagus and abdominal wall. Dr. Shiraga provides expert care for a full range of conditions, including gastric surgery for benign and malignant conditions, reflux diseases, hiatal hernia and complex hernia repair procedures with robotic and non-robotic approaches.

She is also among a select few surgeons in the U.S. with an expertise in D2 lymphadenectomy, a minimally invasive surgical procedure developed in Japan to treat gastric cancer. D2 lymphadenectomy has been shown to offer better long-term results for most patients. In addition, Dr. Shiraga provides comprehensive reflux and hiatal hernia evaluation, treatment and follow-up services to make sure her patients have the best possible outcomes.

As part of her comprehensive approach, she works closely with her plastic surgery colleagues when managing care for patients undergoing abdominal wall reconstruction. Dr. Shiraga is passionate about quality improvement and expanding culturally appropriate approaches to medicine. She is committed to providing a personalized approach to surgery for all her patients, ensuring that treatments are tailored to each patient’s specific needs and wellness goals.

Dr. Shiraga greatly values medical education and research. Her research is centered on gastric cancer and leveraging a multidisciplinary approach to optimize patient outcomes. Dr. Shiraga’s gastric cancer research has been widely published, with her clinical outcomes surpassing international standards and oncologic research outcomes documented in Asia. She regularly presents her work at conferences around the country. In addition to her clinical and research work, she serves as a clinical associate professor of surgery at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. Dr.

Shiraga is a fellow in the American College of Surgeons and an active member of several organizations, including the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, the American Hernia Society and the American Foregut Society. She serves as article and abstract reviewer for the prestigious journal “Endoscopy.”

When she’s not working, Dr. Shiraga loves spending time with her supportive husband and their two children. Dr. Shiraga immigrated from Taiwan when she was 13 years old and is fluent in Mandarin Chinese. She aims to provide enhanced care for the Chinese community in Southern California.
