Minimally Invasive Approaches to Help You Feel Better

If you have knee pain from osteoarthritis, osteonecrosis or trauma and the damage to your knee is limited to one part of your knee, a partial knee replacement may be right for you. Your doctor may recommend the procedure if nonsurgical approaches no longer relieve pain.

Our orthopedic specialists have advanced expertise in joint replacement — including minimally invasive approaches that help you feel better faster. We create a personalized care plan that lets you recover more quickly and live without knee pain.

What Joint Replacement Procedures Are Available for Knees?

Who Is a Candidate for Partial Knee Replacement?

The knee contains three compartments. A partial knee replacement can be useful for those who have damage to one or two knee compartments. If nonsurgical approaches such as weight loss, medicines, physical therapy and cortisone injections do not relieve your symptoms, your specialist may recommend partial knee replacement surgery.

You may be a candidate for partial knee replacement surgery if you:

  • Are younger than 60 years old
  • Do not have inflammatory arthritis
  • Have a fairly healthy knee, including intact ligaments and little pain at rest
  • Have a healthy body weight

What Is Partial Knee Replacement?

During partial knee replacement, your surgeon removes the damaged areas of your knee and replaces them with surgical-grade metal or plastic components. This procedure is an alternative to more invasive total knee replacement. Your surgeon can complete partial knee replacement, using small incisions (cuts). Compared to a total knee replacement, you may have:

  • Less pain
  • Less time in the hospital
  • Quicker return to normal activities
  • Reduced risk of infection

Knee Replacement Recovery

You will need to limit your movement for a few weeks after surgery. Your specialist will likely suggest that you undergo physical therapy for partial knee replacement after your procedure. You will work with a specially trained physical therapist to help you get back moving again as quickly and safely as possible.
